　　I was only eight years old when the Second World War ended, but I can still remember some-thing about the victory celebrations in the small town where I lived on the day when the war in Europe ended. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames rose and soon swallowed the "guy". Everyone was cheering and shouting and an old woman came out of her house with two chairs and threw them on the fire to keep it going. I stood beside my father until the fire started to go down. Not knowing what to say, he said nothing, either. He had fought in the First World War and may have been remembering the end of that. At last he said. "Well, that's it, son. Let's hope that this time it really will be the last one. "

　　Besides myself, only two others took the branch line as far as Redleigh. I gave up my ticket, walked out of the low building, and stood outside waiting. There was a dirty-looking phone box just beside me, as I had been told there would be. I stepped in and phoned the number I had been given. 　　"Good," she said again." Just near you in the yard, there is a green Cortina. "She gave me the number." That's the key to it. Get in and drive out of the yard, and then-" she pause suddenly." Are you still there?"

　　"Yes, of course," I said. Where else would I be, I thought. I was beginning to regret the whole thing. If it hadn't been for an awful(可怕的) spell of no business I would never have touched the job. Getting hold of industrial(工業(yè)的) secrets wasn't really in my line.

　　"Oh good," she said, "you were so silent."

　　"I was listening," I said. "I still am."

　　"Good," she said. "Where was I ? Oh yes, drive out of the yard. It leads to the main road. Then drive straight ahead, along the main road. Have you got all that?"

　　It seemed little enough, but I said I had.

　　"After about five minutes, you passed a disused(廢棄的) garage(汽車庫(kù)). Keep straight on until you come to a crossroads. Go across it and after about fifty yards you'll see a blue truck parked on the left ahead of you."

　　"Yes, I see," I said, in case she thought I'd gone away。

　　"Pull in behind the truck and wait," she said."Right," I said. "What do I wait for?""That's all," she said. "You just wait.""I just wait," I said like a well-trained parrot. "Yes, I see." But I didn't see at all, and was going to ask more questions when she said, "Good, that's it then, good luck," and rang off.
