There is a one-day holiday in most countries on New Year's Day. The real celebrations (慶祝)for New Year happen on the night before-on New Year's Eve. There are several interesting customs in the West, and there are many differences from country to country.
Though Christmas is a family get-together, New Year for some is a time to be with friends too. Parties are most often held to welcome New Year. At such parties, there is food and drink and dancing until the time nears for the coming of New Year.
At midnight, people often say "Happy New Year" to each other. Champagne(香檳酒)is a favorite drink for New Year. In many western countries fireworks(煙火)are let off at midnight, and many people like to make a noise, possibly to drive away bad spirits(幽靈).

I live in a beautiful city. Many visitors come to my city. There are so many colorful peacocks (孔雀)here.
The peacocks mostly live on the grass land of Dongfeng Square(廣場(chǎng)). They are given food freely by visitors. They usually throw food to them, and don't think about at all whether the food is right or not. Some of the peacocks became ill, some even died after eating the bad food given by the visitors.
I'm sure most of the visitors who throw food to the peacocks really like the birds, but don't realize(意識(shí)到)that they may be doing them harm(傷害).
The visitors should be told that what they have done is very harmful to the birds, and this kind of thing must be stopped from happening.
Perhaps we can build some small shops beside Dongfeng Square to sell peacock food. For us every person, it's our duty to give more love to these beautiful birds and to look after them carefully.
