TASK 1

　　1. Describe a person that you look up to as a role model. Explain how this person influenced your life. Include details and examples to support your response.

　　2. Talk about one activity you will do in the near future. Explain why you want to do this activity.

　　3. Describe one of your friends. Explain how you met and became friends.

　　TASK 2

　　1. Sixteen-year-olds are not mature enough to drive cars.

　　2. Some students like studying new materials by taking detailed notes in the class, but some students like studying new materials by listening.

　　3. Some students prefer to study for only one long time during a week. Other students prefer to study for several short periods of time during a week, which do you prefer?

　　TASK 3

　　1. A letter from a student suggesting to set up a lounge inside the Humanity building. So that students can have a place to study nearby, and also a place to get together and discuss questions.

　　The Man in the conversation supports this proposal for 2 reasons.

　　First, they can save some time going to the library (10 minutes to go there and 10 minutes back), and do something useful in half an hour. Second, they can have a place to gather together and discuss. For example, he had a class about Hamlet last time, it was very difficult. His classmates and he hadn’t finished their discussion about Hamlet when the class was over. So they wanted to find a place and keep on talking. But the outside was really cold.

　　2. 【學(xué)生建議】：有封寫給學(xué)校的信，建議add the kitchen in the student dormitory，理由：1、有足夠的空間安置廚房設(shè)備;2、cooking skill is useful.【學(xué)生態(tài)度】 conversation部分：gg反對，理由：1、放廚房的空間原本可以用來watch TV, or taking social activities. 2、不認(rèn)為cooking is a useful skill and 大部分學(xué)生很busy,而學(xué)習(xí)新的技巧，演習(xí)菜譜都會占用學(xué)習(xí)。

　　3. 閱讀：學(xué)校讓新生參加study skill course，是一個從高中到大學(xué)的學(xué)習(xí)的transfer，因?yàn)榇髮W(xué)學(xué)習(xí)跟高中不同。聽力：男生同意，說high school 和college 之間的差別的確很大。他自己當(dāng)年上大一就很迷惘，都是大課，而且也怎么復(fù)習(xí)考試、怎么做研究、怎么寫paper 都不清楚，女生也同意。另外，這個課程是個small group course，學(xué)生可以多和老師interaction(ask questions & share ideas)，而不是只坐在教室聽老師說。

　　TASK 4

　　1.閱讀：Alarm Calls。動物藉由發(fā)出alarm signals 來告知同伴附近有危險(xiǎn)。Alarm calls 可以幫助同伴逃離危險(xiǎn)，種族的生存率也就提高了。但有時也會藉行為驅(qū)趕同伴以降低食物上的競爭 (false alarm calls)。聽力：教授舉例猴子群體生活，一起找食物并共享，當(dāng)有predators 出沒的時候，先看到的猴子會screeching來告知同伴，聽到訊號的同伴就會躲到樹上去免于受害;有一次卻發(fā)現(xiàn)猴群找到了food 準(zhǔn)備要吃的時候，某一只突然screeching 嚇跑其他同伴，但周遭并沒發(fā)現(xiàn)predators 卻看到screeching 的猴子待在原地把食物吃光!

　　2. 閱讀：Animal communication。重點(diǎn)關(guān)注：composition communication，指動物用超過2 種的技巧來傳達(dá)他們的emotion(動物也會發(fā)signal，并可以把不同的signal 組合一起變不一樣的意思)。聽力：教授拿自家的狗舉例子，在兩種不同狀況下的表現(xiàn)：

　　(1)在周圍很noisy 的情況下，尤其當(dāng)當(dāng)狗狗看到大的開車經(jīng)過并伴隨噪音，狗狗會有煩躁，憤怒，出現(xiàn)的動作是耳朵豎起來，會yell 等;(2)如果看到鄰居的狗狗，也會出現(xiàn)耳朵豎起來等情況，但有搖尾巴，所以并不是煩躁憤怒，而是很開心，說明只是想跟它玩。

　　3. 閱讀：false signal。which means animals can mimic, imitate other animals signal，本來是動物向異性動物發(fā)出的mate 的訊號，但是有時候會被他們的天敵利用，給他們帶來殺身之禍。聽力：教授舉例，moth，交配季節(jié)female 的會分泌一種化學(xué)物質(zhì)散發(fā)scent 來吸引male，說female moth release certain chemical to signal male moth to mate，但是他們的天敵predator spider 也會detect the chemical, follow the male to trap the moth。

　　TASK 5

　　1.男生碰到的問題：要在的newspaper 上發(fā)文章，但是照片處理出現(xiàn)些問題，而且他的相機(jī)壞了。女生推薦兩個：方法(1)不要放照片上去，但是男生覺得這樣文章缺少吸引力;方法(2)還有一天的時間，和別人借相機(jī)重新去拍照片，不過怕來不及。

　　2.周五有camping，女生的問題：沒有tent。她朋友可以借一個給他，但太舊了，也有幾個洞;男生建議她買個新的，以后也用得著，她怕自己不喜歡這項(xiàng)運(yùn)動，以后也不一定用得著，會很浪費(fèi)。問題：女生的問題和方案，你建議哪種，why。

　　3.女同學(xué)受傷了，但她ride a bike to class，晚上還要把自行車搬回四樓宿舍。申請了一樓的宿舍，不過要一月以后才available。自己想了兩方案：(1)把自行車放在露天的車棚，但是會挨雨淋，車是新的，不舍得;(2)把自行車放朋友那，不過他們選的課程不一樣，朋友sleep late，所以不大方便。

　　TASK 6

　　1. 跟Marketing 有關(guān)，為了吸引消費(fèi)者，business 必須說明他們的product and services is good。其中service 又是現(xiàn)代營銷的一個重要的東西，business 想辦法讓消費(fèi)者相信他們的service is high quality and can be trusted。教授舉例她的一個朋友，是一個Painter 專門刷House 的，但一開始很少人知道她，因?yàn)樗�以前不做這個。之后她的朋友就讓一些消費(fèi)者寫有關(guān)于她的作品的評論，吸引了很多人過來。另外一種策略是，放上before and after photo 作對比，一些Potential customers 也對作品產(chǎn)生興趣。

　　2. weeds 對莊稼的好處。好處一：防水土流失。coffee 長在steep slope 上，大雨一沖，就容易把有nutrient soil 沖掉，但是有了雜草就hold 一部分soil。好處二：防止害蟲吃莊稼，coffee 的地兒有雜草時，昆蟲會先吃雜草，不吃coffee。因?yàn)閕nsects prefer weeds

　　than coffee，所以可以使咖啡植物長得很好，免受蟲害。

　　3.非營利社會組織non-profit organization 的兩種服務(wù)形式activity(Two service activities used by non-profit organization to improve a community)。一個間接的advocacy，通過媒體，利用電視廣播、報(bào)紙等attract the public awareness，讓人意識到問題。例如：某小區(qū)需要給孩子增加playground，非營利社會組織通過媒體宣傳、廣告，促使人們捐助金錢，興建playground。一個是提供非營利社會組織能提供的direct support。同樣是某小區(qū)需要給孩子增加playground 的例子，他們直接協(xié)助Build the playground and organize people and plant trees。
