　　Tourism, as a multibillion-dollar business, is booming everywhere. Some people, laboring under the belief that tourism serves as an engine of economic growth, seem to ignore its negative effects on the environment and culture. But I think that these are not concerns that we can shrug off lightly.

　　Over the past century, with the development of new means of transportation, travel has become easier than ever. Many popular places are flooded with visitors, who spoil the beauty of nature by creating and leaving rubbish behind God-knows-how-much trash(垃圾). In addition, a lot of unsightly(難看的) artificial facilities have been and continue to be built in order to promote tourism, with disastrous effects on the environment.

　　Another drawback of tourism is the conducted(package) tour, which greatly restricts the exposure of tourists to local culture, contributes little to mutual understanding between nations and cultures. On the contrary, the superficial impressions tourists get during such tours only intensify their stereotyped (老調(diào)的) ideas about other cultures. What’s more, the foreign ways (外來的情形)introduced by travelers may well have an adverse impact on the local people, who tend to be susceptible to(亦受影響的) the influence of more advanced cultures. In the long run, the uniqueness of individual cultures will be "wiped out by such homogenization(同化).

　　But don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that the tourism industry shall be banned in any country, as it does help to shore up(支持) the economy in places which offer few sources of income. The significant point is that the unchecked(未加抑制的) growth of the travel business may render the development of an economy unsustainable(不能成立的). So steps have to be taken to prevent the local culture from being " contaminated " or even engulfed(吞沒) by other cultures. It is high time that we did something to rectify(調(diào)整，矯正) this by taking the environment and cultural protection into account.
