為什么說對于巴黎的市民來說，巴士底獄的意義不同一般呢?巴士底獄這一建筑建于查理五世統(tǒng)治時期的1370年。17世紀(jì)的時候不再用于防御工事。教皇Richelieu把它變成了一所監(jiān)獄。這并不是處罰普通罪行的一般監(jiān)獄。在它巨大的門墻之內(nèi)，關(guān)的僅僅是國王的敵人。巴士底獄的運作方式是秘密的。犯人被完全封閉的交通工具運進(jìn)來。當(dāng)值的士兵站崗時要面對高墻，而且禁止交談。最糟糕的是，囚犯自己從不知道自己要在這關(guān)上一天，一周，一年，或者永遠(yuǎn)。只有國王的親筆信可以釋放里面的囚犯。
在此期間，被國王下令逮捕的人越來越少了。到巴士底獄被攻破的時候，大部分的囚犯都是針對統(tǒng)治者的貪污腐敗進(jìn)行抨擊的文人。伏爾泰Voltaire，法國著名的文人，曾經(jīng)二次被關(guān)在這里，一次從1717年到1718年的一年間，一次是在1726被關(guān)了12天。
對于信仰言論和思想自由的人們，巴士底獄是一切罪惡的象征。在它陷落的那天，里面只有7位囚犯。即使如此，人民還是對巴士底獄深惡痛絕。因為它是國王專政的象征。
