At the present time, the direction of university education has been a heated social issue in debate. Some believe its main target should be training students as technologically experienced people by teaching applicable lessons. Others, however, refute that theoretical courses should be the foundation of university. Personally, I am in favor of the latter view, and my reasons would be expounded as below. Admittedly, the importance of practical courses should never be ignored. In an information age driven by computer, basic knowledge and skills of operating computer and the Internet are universally required in most social jobs, and have been the pre-condition for job interviews. That is to say, the absence of computer teaching in school would trap graduates in the unemployment. Moreover, today, public services have fully shifted from brick-and-mortar buildings to the Internet, so it is mainly through learning computer courses that students can manage their e-bank accounts, cope with online payment for bills of daily life, and search news, thesis and data by online media and libraries. However, I strongly believe that theoretical courses should be given the priority over practical courses, in two main aspects. Firstly, there is no denying that mathematics, a typical theoretical course, is the basis of practical courses of computer or accounting, because the former can provide basic calculating methods, ways of data record and analysis, formulas and testing tools for the studying of latter pragmatic courses. In other words, with ignorance of mathematics, students would fail to find the doorway of computer programming. Besides, seemingly pointless and impractical courses in university have been proven to provide life-long values to all students. Specifically, philosophy equips students with critical thinking, which instructs them to make wise decisions and judgments in daily life. Similarly, through history learning, a student can obtain precious lessons and social experience to avoid repeating the same mistakes happening in the past. Law courses also instill students with social morals and rules, which enables them to be law-abiding, with the ability of distinguishing the right from the wrong. That is to say, under this function of university, a new generation can grow up into maturity and independence fully, and make positive contributions to social civilization. Consequently, by being educated with theoretical courses, students can turn into eligible citizens. In conclusion, I believe theoretical curricula are superior to practical courses. Although computer lessons make students adept in skills required in working and living, the merits brought by mathematics, history and philosophy are more significant, fundamental, and irreplaceable.(416字)
