　　Nowadays, there are fewer applications of high school graduates for science subjects in universities and colleges. In this essay, I will explore possible reasons and impacts of this trend on the society. Many reasons can explain why the population of students majoring science is shrinking. Firstly, Scientific subjects cost too much, and computer science is a typical example. High tuition fees, extra investment in devices and software for studying, in conjunction with the fierce competition in fellowships, make this subject too expensive to be affordable to many youngsters. Secondly, compared with arts subjects, the knowledge of Math, Physics and Chemistry are publicly hard to learn, because they contain too many complicated and obscure theories, formulas and definitions, all of which might bore and frustrate students consistently. On this level, it is reasonable for many applicants to give up science subjects full of challenges and difficulties. The third reason stems from a concern over career prospects. In fact, most graduates of science engage in technology-driven positions, one common feature of which is unsecured and unstable. As long as economic recession, corporate deficit, or technology obsoleteness emerge, technicians and engineers are always the first targets to be influenced. Therefore, young generations are showing less preference in selecting science subjects as the career direction in the future. This phenomenon will negatively affect the running of a society. For one thing, in terms of the lack of new scientists and engineers, countless scientific research and projects in universities and companies will have to go into a massive paralysis. Moreover, the management of social organizations, institutions and corporations are likely to be trapped into disorder, because of the absence of scientific experts and administrators for maintaining the computers, electronic systems and devices. The most alarming effect is that if no youngsters who are adept in originality and critical thinking would like to engage in scientific research, the whole field of science would lose the power and motivation to step forward.(325字)
