The past 20 years have seen enormous changes in the lives and 1 of families in Braintain.

There has also been a huge rise 6 women with children who work. The large rise in divorces has meant many women need to work to support themselves and their children . Passage 2
In primitive societies sick people had to rely on medicine men and witch doctors. It was believed that a person was sick because he had been attacked by evil spirits. The witch doctor’s job was to 1 these spirits.
His method 2 a combination of three methods, the first of 3 was religious. He chanted magic words and used good luck charms which he thought had power 4 the evil spirits that supposedly had entered the patient’s body. 5 , he 6 fed the patient mixtures, which 7 often dirty and 8 , to make the evil spirits 9 uncomfortable that they would gladly 10 and so 11 the patient to get well.
The third method was to give the patient medicines 12 from certain plants and herbs similar 13 shape or texture to the various organs of the body. 14 Our point of view, this was the only method 15 had any value. Modern scientific study has shown that some of these remedies had 16 usefulness in 17 sickness, or 18 in 19 pain, but not for the reasons 20 by the witch doctor.
