第一篇
With a good shopping position and the right amount(數(shù)量)of money , any educated person ought to be able to make a living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small bookseller out of existenceas they have done to the corner shop. But the hours of work are very long---I was only doing a part-time job, but my boss put in a seventy-hour week, besides regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books. The real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life, however, is that while I was in it I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them. There was a time when I really did love books—loved the sight and smell and feel of them—if they were fifty or more years old , that is . Nothing pleased me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them on sale for several pounds. There is a peculiar flavor(獨(dú)特的味道)about the unexpected books you pick up in that kind of collection: little-known eighteenth-century poets, or out-of-date geography books. For occasional(偶爾的)reading—in your bath , for example , or late at night when you aretoo tired to go to bed—there is nothing as good as a very old picture story-book . But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books seen in a mass. Five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little tiresome. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I want to read and can’t borrow, and I never buy rubbish.

Nearly five million people see Grand Canyon each year. Most of them see it from their cars at overlooks along the South Rim. The South Rim is the easiest to reach in the park. The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Services are provided and facilities are open year round. A much smaller number of people see the Canyon from the North Rim, which lies just 10 miles directly across the Canyon from the South Rim. The North Rim rises a thousand feet higher than the South Rim, and is more difficult to reach. Heavy snows close the road to the North Rim from late October to mid-May of each year. Even in good weather it’s harder to get to.The inner canyon includes everything below the rim and is seen mainly by campers, mule rider, or river runners. There are many opportunities here for adventurous persons who want camp, ride a mule to Phanton Ranch, or take a river trip through the Canyon on the Colorado River.Visitor services and facilities inside the national park on the north Rim are only open from mid-May to late October. Weather permitting, the North Rim is open for day use only, following the close of facilities in late October. During this time there are neither services nor overnight facilities.

第三篇
Clay is important because it is used to make containers of all kinds. Workers add water to soften clay. This makes it easier to form into shapes by hand or by machine. Then it is heated to a very high temperature. The result is a container that will last for many years. In many countries, clay was formed from volcanoes. This kind of clay usually contains many minerals. So the fires to make containers from volcanic clay must be hotter than those used for non-volcanic clay. The fires may be as hot as 1400°C, The high temperature should not be reached too fast so that the containers can be dried slowlyYou can add some materials to clay to gain desired results. For example, youcan add sand to prevent tiny breaks or lines from forming on the surface of the final product. But you should not use sand from the coasts of oceans. Instead, you should use from rivers or other areas.Clay often exists in fields covered with some water. The clay will be found about one meter below the ground. River banks often also have clay about one meter or less under the surface. Clay is very shiny when it is wet. You can also take some of the material and add enough water to it. Then press it in your hands until it is about the size of an egg. It is probably clay if it holds together when you stop pressing
