As an important festivalin ancient China, Chongyang Festival was celebrated by holding various activities, such asclimbing mountains, appreciating chrysanthemums, wearing cornel and eating Chongyangcakes. Climbing mountains is a major custom in Chongyang Festival. Ancient people thoughtclimbing mountains on this day could help them avoid misfortune and prevent disasters. Inrecent years, a new meaning has been given to the old festival，and it gradually becomes anannual Seniors’ Day, on which various activities are held in honor of senior people.

Nine is a yang number (a traditional Chinese spiritual concept) in The Book of Changes ,so Double Ninth is called Chongyang .Climbing the mountains is one of the most popular traditions on that day. In September the sky is high and the air is fresh, and climbing the mountains is helpful to keep physical fitness. The tradition of eating double-ninth cakes is associated with climbing the mountains. As a kind of festival foods ,the double-ninth cake was first used to celebrate the autumn harvest. Later, it developed into the custom of climbing the mountains and eating double-ninth cakes, which means that our life will become better and better. Because double ninth sounds like longevity (jiu jiu in Chinese),the Double Ninth Festival nowadays has been given a new meaning-Seniors' Day.

　　An aging society refers to a population structure model in which aging population reaches or exceeds a certain proportion. The region is regarded as entering an aging society according to the UN’s traditional standard that an area’s old people over 60 years old takes up 10% of the total population, while the new standard is old people over 65 years old takes up 7% of the total population. The acceleration of aging will bring enormous pressure to both economy and society. On October 26, 2009 when the Double Ninth Festival, the traditional Chinese festival, came, China formally launched a strategic research on coping with aging of population to deal with increasingly intensifying population aging crisis.
