　　The Southern Dynasties (420-589) is the general name of four dynasties in southern China after the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Following the end of the Eastern Jin Dynasty in 420AD, southern China saw four regimes established by the Han people—Song, Qi, Liang and Chen, in confrontation with the regime established by the Xianbei people. They featured short existence ranging from 23 (Xiao Qi) to 59 years (Liu Song). So, it is a period in Chinese history featured by fast changes of dynasties. And during that time, China was in a period of separation between the southern and the northern parts. They are known as the southern and northern dynasties in combination with Yuan, Wei, Northern Qi and Northern Zhou in northern China.
