　　As a sag pond in southern China, the Dongting Lake is an important storage lake of the Yangtze River basin with strong capacity of flood storage. Located in the south bank of the Jing River in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, it straddles Hunan Province and Jiangxi Province. It is an important strategic place in history and the birthplace of Chinese traditional agriculture as well as a land fertile in fish and rice. It is also the most important base of commercial grains and oil and aquaculture in Hunan Province and even all of China.
