Mazu, the goddess of the sea well-revered for her kindness and virtue, is at the center of a folk culture that includes traditional customs, ceremonies and practices. Temple fairs will commonly occur at Mazu temples in a show of respect for this deity. The legend states that in 987 AD, Mazu sacrificed her life to save fishermen, and was subsequently enshrined in a temple by those same fishermen. Overtime, she became a figure worshipped in maritime areas such as the Chinese coast and parts of Southeast Asia. On September 30th of 2009, the Mazu Belief and Customs was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
