　　Loulan is the name of an ancient country in the western regions with Loulan City as its capital. The term "Loulan" was first seen in the Records of the Grand Historian, and was an essential waypoint on the Silk Road. In 77BC, the State of Loulan was renamed the State of Shanshan and was conquered by the Northern Wei in 448. The Loulan Ruins is located in the lowest lying land of the Tarim Basin, and most of it has been covered by the sands, creating the unique Yardang landscape, due to wind erosion.
