　　Cantonese is a variety of the Chinese language within the Sino-Tibetan language family. It originated from ancient Central Plains Yayan (“elegant speech”), with “nine tones and six modes”. Cantonese is widely used in Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Macau as well as the Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, North America, UK and Australia. The population who use Cantonese worldwide reaches about 70 million. In Hong Kong and Macau, Cantonese holds the dominant position. Apart from Mandarin, it is another fully functional language in the Chinese language group.
