　　New Year’s Eve by the Chinese calendar is also known as the last day of a lunar year. The concept originates from the pre-Qin periods, and is the final night of the twelfth month of the lunar year—and is one of the most important traditional festivals in Chinese culture. Customs include remaining awake overnight—shousui (to stay awake all night on New Year’s Eve); homage to the god of doors; recitation of spring poems and the posting of New Year’s pictures; the hanging of traditional lanterns; etc. These traditions have been passed from generation to generation since ancient times. With its roots in the Chinese cultural sphere, New Year’s Eve is a traditional festival celebrated amongst those in China as well as overseas Chinese worldwide.
