At the beginning of the journey, go to Telok Ayer Street to quickly browse the past and present of Singapore. This is where Chinese immigrants once landed by boat. Although reclamation projects have filled the waterfront and glittering skyscrapers have risen around this narrow street, shrines and temples from different denominations still cling to this faithfully preserved community. Enjoy a few minutes of purification in Tianfu Palace, a carefully restored 19th-century temple built by Fujian immigrants to thank God for letting them cross the sea safely. Passing the minarets and arches of the nearby Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre, deep into Chinatown, Sri Mariamman, the country's oldest Hindu temple, is beckoning tourists to admire the gorgeous gopuram ( Gate tower) and colorful deities.
