Message from Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, on the Occasion of World Day of Romani Language

　　UNESCO proclaimed the World Day of Romani Language in 2015 to promote the preservation of Romani language and culture, improve the well-being of Romani people, and recognize the importance of all languages, whose diversity is a source of strength for all societies to share.

　　教科文組織在2015年宣布了世界羅姆語日，目的是促進(jìn)羅姆語言文化保護(hù)，增進(jìn)羅姆人的福祉，承認(rèn)少數(shù)語言的重要性，而語言多樣性是所有社會(huì)共享的一個(gè)力量之源。

　　Romani language – Romani čhib – is the official language of Romani people across the world, enriched by a history of migration and a wide range of influences. This also gives rise to steep challenges that place this language in danger of extinction. This endangerment throws a shadow over a core part of Romani identity and culture, threatening a unique heritage, rich with knowledge and wisdom. This is why UNESCO calls for greater support to the Romani language, including education in this language especially for Romani children, for whom this is their mother tongue. Recognizing the importance of Romani language must be part of wider efforts to prevent all forms of discrimination and support Romani people, their human rights, social inclusion and development.

　　羅姆語(Romani čhib)是全世界羅姆人的官方語言。羅姆人素喜移徙流浪、足跡遍布世界各地，這成就了這門豐富的語言，也帶來了嚴(yán)峻的挑戰(zhàn)，令這門語言處于滅絕的危險(xiǎn)之中。語言滅絕的危險(xiǎn)給羅姆人的身份和文化內(nèi)核投下了陰影，令這項(xiàng)有著豐富知識(shí)和智慧的獨(dú)特遺產(chǎn)岌岌可危。因此，教科文組織呼吁加大對(duì)羅姆語的支持力度，包括推動(dòng)使用這種語言對(duì)羅姆兒童進(jìn)行教育，因?yàn)檫@是他們的母語。在預(yù)防一切形式的歧視以及支持羅姆人、促進(jìn)其人權(quán)、社會(huì)融入和發(fā)展的廣泛努力中，必須包括對(duì)羅姆語重要性的承認(rèn)。

　　On this World Day of Romani Language, let us all stand with Romani people, to celebrate their culture as part of the wealth of all humanity and to encourage the protection of all languages and cultures across the world on the basis of human rights.

　　值此世界羅姆語日之際，讓我們與羅姆人并肩攜手，頌揚(yáng)作為全人類財(cái)富一部分的羅姆文化，鼓勵(lì)立足于人權(quán)，保護(hù)世界上的所有語言和文化。
