　　Dear Mr. Brown,

　　Because of rising costs, we are forced to raise our advertising rates for next year. We have conducted a survey among many of our advertisers to explain that if we did not do this, we would have to change the quality of the paper of our magazine.

　　Much to our surprise, over 80% of the respondents said they would prefer a moderate increase in price to a decrease in paper quality. The general consensus was that a magazine devoted to the arts is dependent on quality reproduction.

　　We are keeping the increase to a low average of 8.7% starting in January, but we are giving our current clients an opportunity to reserve space at the old rates. Therefore, if we receive a contract from you prior to December 1, the current rates will apply for the entire new year.
